Antique Victorian Leather and Mahogany Library Desk Chair

19th century
Description

A superb antique Victorian leather and mahogany Library desk chair. This was made in England, it dates from the 1870-1890 period.

It is of fantastic quality, it is extremely well made and very comfortable. The mahogany frame has beautifully turned front baluster legs with carved florets at the knees , with lovely scrolled carving on the front of the arms. The leather is absolutely beautiful, it may or may not be original but it definitely has quite a bit of age to it.

We have had the frame re-polished , the leather has been revived and hand coloured by our leather restorer. The condition is superb for its age, with a gorgeous overall patina.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian library desk chairs were produced during the reign of Queen Victoria (18371901) and were specifically crafted for study rooms and writing tables. They are typically constructed from dense hardwoods like mahogany or oak and feature padded arms, deep-buttoned leather upholstery, and sturdy turned or carved legs.

These chairs were built using solid hardwood frames, predominantly mahogany, walnut, or oak. The upholstery utilised natural hide leather fastened with brass studs, while internal padding relied on natural horsehair, coil springs, and jute webbing.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature hand-cut mortise and tenon frame joinery, original brass ceramic castors, and natural age patination on the leather and wood timber. Lower frame rails and leg turnings often display hand-tooled rosette or fluting details typical of the period.

Position the chair alongside a clean-lined modern or contemporary writing desk to create a textural contrast between antique timber and minimalist surfaces. It functions as an accent piece in home offices, libraries, or reading corners paired with natural wood shelving and warm lighting.

Keep the chair away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to prevent the leather from drying or cracking. Clean the leather regularly with a soft cloth and apply specialist leather balm, while preserving the mahogany frame using a high-grade beeswax polish.
