Antique Elm Blanket Box

19th century
Description

A good antique elm blanket box dating from the mid to late 19th century with a lovely rich patina and colour. It is well made with metal carrying handles, a brass escutcheon and its original strap hinges. A good size for a coffee table, end of the bed storage or toy trunk.

It is in good condition for its age. It is strong and sturdy and generally clean and tidy inside. There are signs of use and age, some general knocks and marks and a small repair to a section of the moulded edge but nothing untoward or detrimental. There are signs of old woodworm and a few nibbles in places which has all been treated as a precaution and hasn't affected the box structurally or aesthetically. It has been cleaned and gently polished and is ready for use.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating as essential domestic storage in European households, blanket boxes or coffers were constructed to store textiles, linens, and household valuables prior to the widespread adoption of fitted wardrobes and chests of drawers.

Traditional coffers were constructed from durable native hardwoods such as elm, oak, and pine, often joined using hand-cut dovetail joints and finished with wax polish or natural resins.

Authentic 19th-century timber chests feature natural timber shrinkage, hand-forged iron or brass hardware, hand-planed surfaces, and distinct grain movement characteristic of period elm.

An antique coffer functions effectively as a coffee table in a living area, low-level storage at the foot of a bed, or a functional shoe-storage bench within an entrance hall.

Maintain timber by keeping it away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture, dusting regularly with a dry cloth, and applying beeswax polish annually to nourish the wood grain.
