For Sale by Gilt and Gesso
Description

A Regency Beech and Mahogany Unusual Chair with Drawer C1800 Upholstered.

An enchanting late Georgian to Regency period upholstered country style beech and mahogany chair with the unusual addition of a single drawer beneath the dish shape, saddle seat.

Tastefully upholstered in a 100% wool, tartan fabric within the last 20 years with replacement jute webbing straps, the chair is structurally excellent with no wobbles or lose joints. There are several historic repairs most noticeable to each leg, professional repairs to each end.

Just back from our workshop to ensure all joints are strong and even wax over.

It is unusual to find a chair with a single drawer, this is not an adapted commode chair. Presence of original inlaid marquetry to the front apron, a curious whilst endearing chair. Its repairs and curiosity make this a charming thing with great character and considerable decorative appeal.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency country seating from circa 1800 typically combines practical local hardwoods, such as beech and fruitwoods, with mahogany veneers or accents. These pieces often adapt classic Georgian proportions to functional household needs, occasionally incorporating storage features like under-seat drawers.

Craftsmen utilized native woods including beech and pine for internal framing, paired with primary woods like mahogany. Construction techniques involved hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery, dovetail drawer joints, and traditional upholstery stuffed with natural horsehair and fibres.

Authentic period pieces display uneven hand-planed surfaces, square-cut nails or original hand-turned screws, and timber shrinkage marks consistent with age. Drawers will show hand-cut dovetails and natural wear along the wooden runners rather than modern metal slides.

A single Regency side chair works as a functional accent piece in an entryway, alongside a writing desk, or within a bedroom corner. Combining period timber framing with updated textile seat coverings bridges historical craftsmanship with modern interior schemes.

Clean wooden components using a soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to maintain the patina. Keep timber away from direct heat sources to prevent shrinkage, and protect fabric seats from direct sunlight.
