Exceptional Matched Pair Antique French Kingwood Vernis Martin Vitrine Display Cabinets with Marble Tops & Ormolu Mounts C.1880

19th century
Description

An exceptional and highly decorative matched pair of antique French kingwood vitrines dating to circa 1880, beautifully crafted in the Louis XV taste and retaining their original marble tops, finely cast ormolu mounts and exquisite Vernis Martin panels.

Constructed from richly figured kingwood veneers arranged in elegant parquetry patterns, each cabinet is adorned with intricate gilt bronze mounts of outstanding quality. The lower panels feature finely painted Vernis Martin scenes, signed V. Gossens, depicting romantic and allegorical subjects executed in the Rococo manner.

One cabinet retains its luxurious original crimson silk-lined interior, creating a striking backdrop for the display of porcelain, silver, objets d'art or fine collectibles. The companion cabinet features a more understated interior, allowing the exceptional veneers and painted decoration to take centre stage. Both are fitted with glass shelves and glazed sides, maximising light and visibility from every angle.

Pieces of this quality are becoming increasingly difficult to source, particularly as a true matched pair. Their combination of kingwood parquetry, marble, ormolu and signed painted panels places them firmly within the upper tier of late nineteenth-century French decorative furniture.

Equally suited to a period interior, luxury apartment, country house or sophisticated modern setting, these vitrines offer both practical display space and significant decorative presence.

A rare opportunity to acquire an investment-grade pair of French cabinets that combine craftsmanship, artistry and enduring collectability.

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Vernis Martin vitrine is a glazed display cabinet decorated using an 18th-century French lacquer technique developed by the Martin brothers, often featuring hand-painted romantic or mythological scenes.

These cabinets were constructed using fine hardwoods such as kingwood or rosewood veneers, fitted with cast ormolu mounts, topped with natural marble, and finished with glass panels.

Authentic period examples feature hand-applied lacquer work, fine parquetry or marquetry veneers, heavy cast brass or bronze mounts with natural patination, and hand-cut joinery.

Place the cabinet against a neutral wall to allow the detailed marquetry and metalwork to stand out, using the interior shelves to showcase curated ceramics or glassware.

Dust the timber and lacquered panels gently with a dry microfibre cloth, clean marble tops with a pH-neutral cleaner, and keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight.
