This mid-19th century French Rococo Revival display cabinet is made from warm brown kingwood veneer with extensive gilt ormolu decoration, including foliate mounts, corner sabots, and egg-and-dart moulding along the cornice. The piece features an inverted cornice, a quarter-veneered top, two glazed doors with ripple glass set within shaped frames, and a shaped apron centred with an ormolu mount above cabriole legs. Inside, the interior is lined in light blue fabric across the back, sides, and base, complemented by two adjustable glass shelves behind the locking doors. Measuring 137.2 cm high, 132.8 cm wide, and 36.2 cm deep, this practical freestanding cabinet works well in a drawing room, study, or hallway. It provides a formal, enclosed storage space to showcase ceramics, glassware, books, or decorative objects, protecting items behind glass while adding a classic architectural element to an interior setting.

Mid-19th century French vitrines were designed to showcase curated items, featuring glass doors, exotic veneers such as kingwood, and decorative cast bronze ormolu mounts influenced by earlier Louis XV aesthetics.

Cabinet makers combined solid timber frames with rich parquetry veneers like kingwood or rosewood, incorporating glass panels, fabric linings, and gilt-bronze ormolu hardware.

Authentic ormolu mounts feature hand-chased surface details, heavy cast bronze construction, and original gilded finishes, often exhibiting slight oxidisation or dark patina on the unpolished reverse sides.

Position the piece against a neutral backdrop to emphasize the rich wood veneers, utilizing the glazed interior to hold minimalist ceramics, sculptural objects, or modern glassware.

Dust surfaces regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply natural beeswax sparingly to the timber, taking care to keep polish off the metallic ormolu mounts which require only soft dusting.
