Prince of Wales 1969 Investiture “Red” Chair

Later than 1960
Description

Known as “the Red Chair”, from the Prince of Wales's Investiture, which was held at Caernarfon Castle in 1969.

Designed by Lord Snowden, and with the help of Carl Toms and John Pound, 4,600 copies were produced by the Remploy factory in Bridgend South Wales. The chairs’ frames are beechwood with seats and backs constructed from preformed plywood, veneered in olive ash and stained in a vermillion red.

This chair has survived in excellent condition, (the seat fabric is a rare, unused piece of the original textile woven specially for the Investiture. The foam filling has been renewed).

Date of Manufacture

Havard and Havard has dated this 1969 Investiture Red Chair to a period later than 1960.

Designed by Lord Snowdon alongside Carl Toms and John Pound, these chairs were created specifically for guests attending the 1969 Investiture of the Prince of Wales at Caernarfon Castle. Manufactured in Wales, the design offered a modern, minimalist take on traditional ceremonial seating.

The chairs were constructed from British ash wood, finished with a bright vermilion red stain, and feature a seat pad upholstered in matching red fabric. The backrest is embellished with an indented gilding technique forming the Prince of Wales feathers crest.

Authentic examples display the distinct gold-leaf Prince of Wales feathers emblem pressed into the flat back panel, a flat-pack mortise and tenon joint construction, and the signature bright vermilion stain showing the natural grain of the ash wood underneath.

With its bold geometric silhouette and vivid colourway, this item functions effectively as a sculptural accent chair. It creates a striking contrast when placed in a contemporary living room, hallway, or study alongside minimalist or neutral furnishings.

Position the piece away from direct sunlight to prevent the red stain and upholstery from fading over time. Dust the wooden frame regularly with a dry, soft cloth, and clean the fabric seat pad using gentle upholstery cleaning techniques without harsh chemicals.
