Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian agate boxes are small decorative containers produced during the nineteenth century, popularised in part by Scottish stone crafts and lapidary art. These items were designed to hold pills, snuff, or small trinkets and featured polished mineral specimens mounted in decorative metal settings.

These boxes were constructed using polished semi-precious stone slabs, such as banded agate, moss agate, or jasper, fitted into metal frames. The mounts were typically made from brass, gilt metal, sterling silver, or pinchbeck, often featuring hand-engraved or chased pattern work.

Authentic Victorian examples often exhibit hand-chased metal mounts, period-appropriate multi-barrel hinges, and natural inclusions within the cut agate panels. Consistent wear on the base, natural patination on the metalwork, and precise hand-fitted stone settings further indicate period authenticity.

A small agate box can be placed atop a stack of design books on a sideboard, arranged alongside brass desk accessories in a study, or displayed on a vanity tray. Its natural stone grain and metallic finish provide tactile contrast when layered alongside modern materials.

Dust the item gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth and avoid immersing the box in water, which can weaken the cement securing the stone panels. Avoid aggressive chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes, as these can strip the original gilding and damage the mineral surface.
