Antique Victorian Satinwood Display Cabinet

19th century
Description

A magnificent and very rare antique Victorian satinwood display cabinet, beautifully made from inlaid satin wood. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1880-1890 period.

The quality is exceptional, one of the absolute best we have ever come across. There is amazing carving throughout, including the top central motif, four beautiful fluted Corinthian column supports and various other intricate carved areas. There is wonderful inlay across the top frieze and lower drawers, the drawers have stunning and very high quality brass handles. This even retains the four carved satin wood urns on each upper corner. There are two heavy glass shelves inside, and the lining looks original, it is in lovely condition with just some minor wear.

Overall this is in excellent condition for its age, with only some minor wear to be seen. There are one or two tiny areas of moulded carving that are missing here and there, barely noticeable at all.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Sheraton Revival furniture from the late Victorian era draws inspiration from late 18th-century designs, characterised by slender classical proportions, delicate inlaid decoration, and extensive use of satinwood veneers.

Glazed cabinets from this period feature solid timber frameworks layered with decorative satinwood marquetry veneers, hand-fitted glass panes secured by astragal moulding, and cast brass drawer hardware.

Authentic late 19th-century pieces exhibit hand-dovetailed drawer construction, original brass locks, and minor natural age movement along veneer joints, paired with crisp hand-carved architectural mouldings.

Position the cabinet against a neutral wall to highlight the rich satinwood tones, and curate the interior shelves with contemporary ceramics, glassware, or art books to create a balanced contrast.

Keep the cabinet away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber movement. Dust with a soft microfibre cloth and apply a clear beeswax polish sparingly once a year to preserve the surface patina.
