Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Continental mirrors from this period typically feature hand-carved timber bases coated with gessoa mixture of chalk and binderto allow for intricate sculptural relief. Influenced by Baroque design, these frames feature deep profile mouldings and bold architectural motifs.

These pieces were constructed using soft or hardwoods for the core structure, coated with layers of gesso plaster, and finished with paint or gold leaf. The glass plates were made using mercury amalgams or early silvering methods that age distinctly over time.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-tool marks on the rear timber backings, natural shrinkage cracks along joint lines, and loss of gesso where the plaster substrate has dried. The glass plate will show genuine foxing, characterised by dark grey or silver oxidisation spots within the metallic backing.

A small carved mirror creates visual contrast when positioned above a minimalist console table, within a gallery wall, or placed directly on a mantelpiece. Pairing distressed dark timber frames against contemporary neutral plaster or painted walls highlights the sculptural quality of the carving.

Dust the frame gently with a soft dry brush to avoid dislodging delicate gesso flakes, avoiding damp cloths or liquid polish on the painted areas. Clean the foxed glass plate lightly with a dry microfiber cloth without applying moisture near the frame edges.
