Japanese Meiji Period Shodana Cabinet

19th century
Description

An exquisite Japanese Meiji period antique shodana display cabinet with the finest silver string inlay and exceptionally fine quality carving throughout. The cabinet has beautiful carved landscape scenes, birds, cherry blossom and chrysanthemum design to the inset door and drawer panels, with fretted panels to the front, back and sides including scroll and fan design.

There are lovely features to the cabinet including a carved landscape scene of Mount Fuji to one of the double doors, along with Komainu and Kirin carvings standing on pedestals, which are symbols of protection, peace and good luck. The double doors are finished with delicately carved floral, butterfly and insect bone clasp. The drawer and door framework are all finished with fine quality Greek key and meander pattern silver string inlay with brass embossed corner brackets.

The cabinet comes in two sections and stands on a cabriole shaped base with lower shelf, abundant with floral carving to the legs. The door and drawer framework is made from padauk, the carved panels are made from stained pear wood and the cabinet itself is made from stained maple.

The cabinet has staggered shelving with sliding door cupboard space and drawers, ideal for displaying oriental works of art, or it could simply be used as a stand alone piece of furniture. This exceptional shodana cabinet is in excellent condition throughout.

A shodana is a traditional Japanese display cabinet that originated in classic domestic interiors and gained prominence during the Meiji period (18681912). It features an asymmetrical layout of open shelves, small sliding or hinged cupboards, and drawers designed for showcasing art objects, ceramics, and books.

Shodana cabinets were typically constructed using indigenous hardwoods such as keyaki, shitan, or cedar, joined with traditional Japanese joinery techniques without nails. They frequently incorporate hand-carved relief panels depicting flora and fauna, alongside metal mounts and hinges.

Authentic pieces exhibit precise joinery, complex asymmetrical proportions, hand-carved decorative motifs, and patinated metalwork. Hand-planed timber surfaces, age-appropriate wear around handles and shelves, and fine relief carvings of traditional scenes help distinguish original cabinets from later reproductions.

A shodana works as a focal point in hallways, living areas, or study spaces. Its tiered asymmetrical compartments allow for the organized display of small sculptures, ceramics, or books, contrasting effectively against simple, neutral backdrops.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and fluctuating humidity levels to prevent cracking or warping. Dust gently using a soft brush for intricate carvings, and apply a natural beeswax paste occasionally to protect the original finish and wood patina.
