18th Century Georgian Oak Spice Cabinet

18th century
Description

A lovely oak spice cabinet dating from the mid to late 18th century. It has an open front with a series of 8 small drawers in varying different sizes, each with a small brass ring handle. It would have once had a door over the front and there are some small marks where the hinges were but it is still an attractive item nonetheless.

It is in good condition with a wonderful rich patina. There are some signs of age and use, some small marks and knocks and old splits in the back boards but no major damages or anything detrimental. Some of the handles have been repaired or replaced over the years but it still displays very well. It has been cleaned and given a gentle polish and is ready for use.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian spice cabinet is a compact tabletop wooden storage unit historically crafted to store and secure valuable spices, herbs, and medicinal preparations.

These cabinets were typically built from solid native hardwoods like oak or walnut, utilizing hand-cut dovetail joints, small brass brass drop-ring handles, and internal drawer partitions.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-sawn wood marks, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, irregular proportions, original brass or iron hardware, and a deep natural surface patination.

An antique spice cabinet can be placed on top of a sideboard, kitchen counter, or desk to provide organised storage for small household items, desk accessories, or jewellery.

Maintain the piece by dusting regularly with a dry cloth and applying a light layer of natural beeswax polish annually, avoiding direct heat sources or high humidity.
