This large Edwardian wall mirror dates from circa 1910 and follows the Chinoiserie style. The piece consists of a wooden oval frame finished in a black lacquer, complemented by hand-painted gold leaf decoration depicting traditional landscapes, pagodas, foliage, and geometric lattice border panels. A bevelled glass mirror plate sits within the centre of the dark frame, displaying light surface wear consistent with age. Measuring 97 cm high, 71 cm wide, and 5 cm deep, the mirror functions well within an English Country House aesthetic. It is suitable for hanging above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table in a living room, hallway, or dining room to bring a traditional decorative accent to interior spaces.

Chinoiserie emerged in 17th-century Europe as decorative art imitating Chinese and East Asian artistic traditions. The style experienced revivals throughout the 18th, 19th, and early 20th centuries, with Edwardian craftsmen incorporating gilded oriental landscapes, pagodas, and flora onto dark lacquered frames.

Pieces from this period typically feature wooden frames finished with black or dark green japanned lacquer. Decorative elements were hand-painted using gold leaf, bronze powder, or metallic paint, encasing a central silvered glass mirror plate.

Authentic items display fine hand-painted brushwork rather than printed stencils, often with slight raised relief in the gilded areas. The reverse side usually shows aged timber backboards, square-cut or period-appropriate nails, and subtle surface crazing in the lacquer.

Positioning the piece above a contemporary console table or fireplace mantel creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern minimalism. The gold detailing reflects warm light, making it suitable for entryway walls or dining spaces.

Dust the lacquered frame gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a natural feather duster. Avoid liquid cleaners, solvents, or abrasive polishes, as these can strip the delicate gilded paintwork and alter the original patination.
