An antique Italian Baroque reliquary mirror stands in giltwood and polychrome finish, dating from 1800. The gold, red and black gilt painted foliate frame incorporates ornate acanthus leaf carving, floral scrollwork, and a stepped pedestal base. A gold crown surmounts the piece, encasing a sacred flaming heart with thorns, while a foxed central mirror plate is set within. Signs of age include visible cracks, old repairs, and missing pieces across the carved wooden surfaces. The object measures 52 cm high, 28 cm wide, and 9.5 cm deep. Placement suits a mantelpiece, sideboard, or console table in a traditional interior, adding historical character and devotional artistry to a living space. The standing format allows easy placement on flat surfaces without wall mounting, while the compact footprint fits narrow ledges or shelves. The rich polychrome palette and sculptural crest provide a decorative focal point for collectors of religious artifacts and period home accessories.

FAQs

An Italian reliquary mirror is a carved devotional frame or small table mirror originating from Italy, historically crafted to house sacred relics or serve as a decorative object adorned with religious iconography like the Sacred Heart.

These pieces were typically carved from softwoods, coated in gesso, and finished using water gilding with gold leaf alongside hand-painted polychrome accents surrounding mercury glass.

Authentic period examples demonstrate hand-carved structural timber beneath layered gesso, natural wear to gilding revealing underlying bole, and early glass displaying subtle oxidation consistent with age.

Position the piece as a focal accent on a mantelpiece, console, or sideboard alongside natural stone or muted backdrops to highlight its carved sculptural silhouette.

Maintain a stable indoor climate away from moisture and direct sunlight, dust gently with a soft feather duster, and avoid liquids or cleaning solvents on the gilded timber.
