Regency Leather Bound Writing Slope Sewing Jewellery Box Engraved "K" 1818

19th century
Description

This is a beautifully preserved example of a Regency period writing slope that also functions as a sewing box.

The leather-bound table work box features a stepped square central panel with an engraved brass cartouche dating back to 1818. It is flanked by ribbed scroll supports and adorned with gilt metal mounts. The interior reveals a fitted compartment above a single sewing box tray, along with an additional tray drawer and a writing box drawer at the base that includes a fold-out writing slope. The piece rests on four raised gilt metal lion paw feet and includes ring handles.

Inside, you will find its original leather and blue paper-lined compartments, along with personal curiosities left by previous owners. The cartouche bears a large ornate letter "K," which corresponds to the handwriting provenance underneath the base. The surname "Kirkpatrick" is inscribed along with the date 1818.

This entire box showcases a stunning neoclassical sarcophagus shape that is characteristic of the period.

It is a country house antique in great untouched, worn condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Regency style boxes, produced in Britain during the early 19th century, are defined by classical symmetry, sarcophagus forms, and heavy neoclassical metalwork. They frequently feature detailed leather work, lion paw feet, brass rosettes, and drop ring handles.

These pieces were typically constructed with a sturdy wooden core, usually pine or mahogany, bound in fine tooling leather such as morocco or goat skin. Cast brass was commonly employed for the feet, escutcheons, handles, and corner embellishments.

Authentic Regency boxes exhibit period construction details such as hand-cut dovetail joints, original steel locks with brass escutcheons, and natural wear or oxidisation on hand-cast brass hardware. The leather tooling and gilding usually show age-appropriate wear around handling points.

Antique boxes function as decorative accents on sideboards, coffee tables, or home office desks. They provide textural contrast when paired with contemporary surfaces and serve as functional storage for small trinkets, stationery, or jewellery.

Keep leather boxes away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent drying or cracking. Clean metal fittings gently with a soft cloth, avoiding harsh chemicals that might strip aged patina or damage adjacent leather surfaces.
