The English Interior has dated this piece to the 19th Century.
It is characterised by its a narrow, high-panelled back, scrolling arms, and a distinctive trapezoidal seat designed to accommodate full skirts. As the design allowed for intimate conversation, with the French name "caquetoire" derived from the verb caqueter, meaning to chatter or gossip.
The chair offered here is a fine example of this distinctive form, which was used in France and later adopted in Eastern Scotland and other parts of Europe. It has a wonderful warm patina and it is a useful additional chair in any room in the house. Its size may be diminutive but it can also accommodate the most generous of posteriors
