This 19th century gentleman's library snuff box consists of a dark brown coquilla nut shell with an overall reddish-brown timber tone, a visible vertical join line near the left end, and deep relief carving throughout. The hinged lid displays a central cameo medallion of a female profile in relief, enclosed by intricate leaf and foliage motifs and textured border mouldings. Turned cylindrical end sections feature carved floral rosettes and layered leaf patterns, while patterned borders frame the lower body. It measures 8.5 cm long by 4.5 cm wide. This small decorative container sits well on a bookshelf, desk top or display cabinet in a home study or living room today.

A coquilla nut snuff box is a decorative container carved from the hard shell of the South American Attalea funifera palm nut, which was popular in Europe during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries for holding powdered tobacco.

These boxes were carved from the dense nut of the coquilla palm using small chisels and lathe turning tools, frequently featuring detailed relief carvings, classical portraits, floral motifs, or engine-turned patterns.

Authentic pieces display a deep dark brown or chestnut patina, a dense grain structure similar to hardwood, distinct natural weight, and precise hand-carved detailing without modern machine marks.

These small carved objects can be displayed inside a glass curiosity cabinet, placed atop a desk tray, or arranged alongside other antique collectables on a bookshelf or mantelpiece.

Dust the surface gently with a soft dry brush, keep the item away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity changes, and avoid applying harsh liquid chemical cleaners to the porous natural material.
