During the Georgian period, snuff boxes were small containers designed to carry finely powdered tobacco, known as snuff. They were crafted from metals, horn, or semi-precious stones and served as personal accessories carried in pockets or purses.

Eighteenth-century snuff boxes frequently utilised gilt metal, silver, gold, tortoiseshell, and polished hardstones such as agate or jasper. Hinges and mounts were constructed to ensure a tight seal to keep the contents dry.

Authentic Georgian examples typically feature hand-cut and polished natural agate panels mounted in hand-formed gilt metal or silver settings. Look for era-appropriate hinge construction, natural surface patination or oxidisation, and slight structural irregularities consistent with historical handcrafting.

Small antique boxes can be displayed on a tray upon a desk, placed on top of stacked art books on a coffee table, or integrated into a curated display cabinet alongside other small decorative items.

Dust the item gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and avoid liquid cleaners that could strip the gilding or alter the stone surface. Store the object away from high humidity and direct sunlight to protect the metal joints and stone.
