Kashmiri lacquerware and papier-mache crafts have roots tracing back to medieval Persia and Central Asia, introduced to Kashmir by artisans and rulers. By the 19th century, production flourished under royal patronage, creating highly decorative items for both domestic use and export to Europe during the British colonial period.

These items are traditionally constructed from lightweight wood, paper pulp, or layers of paper pasted together, then coated with a smooth ground layer of plaster or chalk. Artisans apply intricate hand-painted polychrome motifs using natural pigments and finish the piece with a protective varnish or lacquer coating.

Authenticity is determined by examining the hand-painted detailing, natural craquelure in the lacquer surface, traditional pigment coloration, and signs of age such as oxidation and wear on the underside. Period pieces from the 19th century typically feature organic animal glues, vegetable dyes, and construction methods consistent with historical workshops.

This piece works well placed on a study desk, console table, or bookshelf to introduce rich colour, texture, and global heritage. It pairs effectively with both minimalist modern furniture and traditional dark wood pieces as a contrasting decorative accent.

Keep lacquerware away from direct sunlight, high humidity, and extreme temperature fluctuations to prevent the surface from cracking or fading. Dust gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and avoid using chemical cleaners, water, or solvents.
