18 Inch Dial Double Fusee Thwaites & Reed of London Build No. 10091

19th century
Description

Hi

I have for sale a beautiful double fusee dial clock made in London by Thwaites & Reed I would date this clock to around 1880, with a mega rare 18-inch original dial in a solid mahogany wood case. This would have cost mega money in the day.

This clock is in beautiful original condition with the sound frets at the sides a bottom opening door with the original key and matched three locks.

The clock movement is simply stunning I have never seen such a well-built movement thick plates and a five-pillar movement. I have serviced the movement it is signed on the back by the retailer and on the front plate T&R 10091.

The Case

The case is in solid mahogany wood and stands 56cm High and x20cm in depth. It is in original condition well-waxed and loved over the years and presented to you in beautiful condition ready to hang and enjoy.

The case is very old and has a few small age-related dings but you would have to look very close to see they looks great on the wall and so different.

To the top of the clock is the steel hanging bracket.

The Dial

The dial is in original condition 45.5 cm or 18” inches in old money across painted white with Roman numerals and covered by glass in a mega heavy cast brass bezel with beveled glass you need a strong arm to lift it up.

The dial is signed Thwaites & Reed London 10091.

The Movement

The movement is an eight-day time and strikes double fusee it is a thick plated heavy built movement which I have fully serviced.

The fusee barrels are run via original chains; she still retains the original, solid cast pendulum and winding key.

The strike is on a massive gong inside the case and sounds amazing as it resonates out of the old case.

This movement is of top quality with a five-pillar movement.

On top of the movement is a strike /silent lever to stop the clock striking if required.

Overall, if you are looking for a double fusee English dial clock from the 1800s this is the one it is simply stunning and will keep serving for many years to come I wish these clocks could talk about what a story this one would have to tell.

If you require any more information or pictures please ask you are welcome to come and view the clock.

I will not post but might use any van to deliver so I ask for half this cost.

Please note the other clock is a standard 12 inch dial not included by to help show the size of this monster.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A double fusee dial clock is a mechanical British wall clock featuring a spring-driven movement with conical fusee gears to maintain equal power, operating both the timekeeping and an hourly striking mechanism.

These clocks are constructed with turned mahogany or walnut surrounds, painted sheet-iron dials, brass movement plates, steel arbors, and protective glass covers held in brass bezels.

Authentic examples feature heavy cast-brass movement plates connected by turned pillars, hand-painted Roman numerals, maker signatures on the dial face, and natural wear on the wooden casing.

Position the clock as a focal piece on a neutral painted wall, hallway, or home office to contrast mechanical historical design with modern furnishings.

Mount the clock level on a load-bearing wall fixture, wind it regular intervals using the correct key size, and have the movement professionally cleaned and oiled every five to seven years.
