Overmantel mirrors gained prominence during the 19th century as key architectural elements in Victorian drawing rooms. Designed to rest directly on a fireplace mantelpiece, they served to reflect gaslight and candles, enhancing ambient illumination while displaying Rococo Revival and Neoclassical carved motifs.

Frames were typically constructed from carved pine or lime wood, coated with layers of gesso plaster and red or yellow clay bole. Thin sheets of gold leaf were water-gilded onto the surface and burnished, framing hand-blown silvered or mercury glass plates.
