This nineteenth-century Scandinavian folk art handmade pine box exemplifies traditional Swedish woodwork from circa 1830. Constructed from pine with an oval bentwood form, the exterior displays a black-painted finish contrasted with natural pine inside. Visible details comprise heavy iron strap work held in place by metal rivets, a decorative keyhole escutcheon on the front, an original working lock with its key, and a curved metal carrying handle on the lid. Natural age splits appear in the wood alongside minor losses, reflecting authentic period wear. The piece measures 21.6 cm high, 49.5 cm wide, and 32.4 cm deep. Originally utilised for storing household valuables, this rustic farmhouse box suits placement on a sideboard top in a modern home. Collectors value the authentic metal hardware and the robust construction that characterise Scandinavian folk art traditions. The working lock mechanism requires careful handling due to its age, adding to the historic charm of the item. It functions well as a decorative storage container for small personal items while introducing period character to an interior.

These containers were handcrafted in rural Nordic communities during the 19th century to store personal valuables, textiles, or documents, reflecting regional woodworking traditions.

They were predominantly constructed from local softwoods such as pine or birch, often reinforced with hand-forged iron hardware, protective straps, and lock mechanisms.

Authentic pieces feature hand-hammered ironwork, irregularity in the rivets, hand-cut joinery, and natural wear or surface oxidisation around metal contact points.

Display the item on a console table, sideboard, or open shelving as a tactile accent piece that adds visual contrast against clean, minimalist surfaces.

Keep the box in a climate-controlled environment away from direct heat sources and moisture, dusting lightly with a dry soft cloth to protect the original finish.
