Pair of Art Deco Burr Walnut Bedside Cabinets

This pair of original Art Deco bedside cabinets, decorated in burr and figured walnut with super Bakelite and chrome handles, perfectly evoke this period synonymous with opulence and style that spanned the 1920s and 30s. It has become one of the most recognisable and influential design styles; portrayed so vividly within P G Wodehouse's Jeeves and Wooster novels. A hundred years have passed but their appeal has not diminished; these chic cabinets will enhance contemporary as well as period homes and apartments. The burr walnut veneer, which has now been traditionally re-polished; has a subtle mirror-like quality. Elements of the original and very distinctive drawer and door handles have been re-plated. The small chrome knobs on the pull-out slides and the door hinges are sympathetic replacements. The mahogany lined draws constructed using finely cut dovetail joints are in excellent condition. There is a small area of discoloured walnut veneer inside the open storage area to one of the cabinets. A historic perfume spillage (please see image) would account for this; however, I prefer to see the mark, which reflects the cabinet’s age and use, rather than the effect of harsh restoration. We have ordered two pieces of glass with polished edges which will protect their decorative walnut tops. A lovely pair of bedside cabinets from a period that is a firm favourite of mine.
