Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian decanter and games box is a specialised wooden storage chest designed during the nineteenth century to hold spirit decanters, glassware, and gaming accoutrements such as playing cards or chess pieces. These boxes often featured secure locking mechanisms and custom fitted interiors to protect valuable crystal and entertainment items.

These boxes were typically constructed from high-quality hardwoods such as quarter-sawn oak, mahogany, or walnut, often featuring brass or nickel-plated metal corner mounts, strapwork, and escutcheons for both protection and decoration. Interiors were frequently lined with velvet, leather, or cedar to cushion glassware and gaming pieces.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples feature hand-cut dovetail joints, period-correct lock mechanisms often stamped with maker marks or patent details, and natural patina on metal mounts. The timber usually displays distinctive grain patterns, such as medullary rays in quarter-sawn oak, alongside subtle surface wear consistent with age.

A Victorian oak decanter box serves as a functional decorative object when displayed on a sideboard top, drinks trolley, or home library desk. It integrates effectively into traditional schemes or provides a focal point in contemporary spaces when combined with glass stemware or leather-bound books.

To preserve the timber finish, dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year in the direction of the grain. Metal mounts should be kept free from moisture, and harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes must be avoided to preserve the natural patina.
