Description:
This is a fine quality matched pair of Georgian elm dining chairs, circa 1780, of rural provenance, in the style of the Chippendale period, with newly upholstered seats, in good original condition. It’s unusual to see Chippendale style chairs constructed from elm; we believe they were designed for a country / rural home; rather than a fine townhouse. The
... chairs are constructed of solid elm and feature a shaped top rail, with simple pierced central fretwork back splats, flanked by vertical rails, featuring a drop-in seat within the seat frame. The seats have been newly upholstered in top quality heavy duty deep chili red ribbed satin upholstery. The seats have been finished with tradition hessian backing to the undersides. Therefore, the seats are in excellent and clean condition, with no marks. The seats are well padded and firm but comfortable at the same time – you do not sink into the seat. If you do not like the fabric, we will recover the seats in a fabric of your choice (we charge £30 labour per seat). The matched pair of Georgian elm dining chairs feature sabre legs to the rear, united by ‘H’ stretchers for additional strength.
Condition Report:
The chairs have been cleaned and French polished and all loose joints have been glued in our workshop; therefore, the chairs are solid in joint. Evidence of historical woodworm, which has been thoroughly treated for precaution. Please note, it is common for most elm chairs of this age to have signs of historical woodworm, as this was a susceptible timber. As the Georgian dining chairs retain the original polish, the frames boast a lovely original colour and patination that has some variation. They are solid in joint (not loose or wobbly) and are ready to use.
