FAQs

Regency overmantel mirrors emerged during the British Regency era in the early 19th century, heavily influenced by classical Greco-Roman architecture and the neoclassical tastes of the period.

These mirrors are typically constructed from carved softwood or composition ornament applied to a wooden frame, finished with water gilding or oil gilding over a layer of gesso.

Authentic pieces often exhibit period-appropriate joinery, hand-applied gesso and gold leaf showing natural wear, and older glass plates that may feature slight foxing or distortions.

Positioning this piece above a fireplace mantel creates a traditional focal point, while mounting it on a plain wall in a minimalist room adds textural contrast and historical depth.

Dust gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding any liquid cleaners, abrasive chemicals, or excessive moisture which can damage the delicate gold leaf and gesso layers.
