Antique Liberty & Co Arts & Crafts Oak Chair C1900

1900 - 1920
Description

An authentic Liberty & Co Arts & Crafts chair, dating to circa 1900, beautifully exemplifying the movement’s emphasis on honest materials, structural clarity, and restrained decorative detail.

The chair is constructed in solid oak, featuring a tall ladder-back with finely carved pierced crest rail, characteristic of Liberty’s in-house designs inspired by medieval and vernacular English furniture. The turned front legs, chamfered rear supports, and shaped stretcher base provide both visual balance and structural integrity.

The seat is upholstered in a traditional floral needlework textile, complementing the warmth of the oak frame and remaining sympathetic to the period aesthetic.

A rare and desirable example from one of Britain’s most influential design houses, this chair works equally well as a statement occasional piece, desk chair, or within a broader Arts & Crafts or period interior.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The Arts and Crafts movement emerged in the late 19th century, emphasising traditional craftsmanship, simple forms, and natural materials like solid oak, often integrating subtle carved motifs or stylised organic patterns.

These chairs typically featured solid dark oak or walnut timber construction with hand-turned legs, mortise and tenon joinery, and padded seats upholstered in woven tapestry or drop-in needlepoint cushions.

Authentic pieces often display distinctive features such as high slatted backs, stylised Celtic or Art Nouveau carving on the crest rail, barley twist turnings, and quality timber construction.

A high-back Arts and Crafts chair functions as a standalone accent piece in an entryway, alongside a writing desk, or grouped with modern dining furniture to add historical texture.

Dust the woodwork regularly with a soft cloth and apply clear beeswax periodically to protect the patina, while keeping the embroidered seat away from direct sunlight and vacuuming gently with a soft brush attachment.
