Description

A beautiful and very well made antique William IV period mahogany and leather caned armchair. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1830-1840 period.

It is of very fine quality, the solid mahogany frame has beautifully carved scrolled armrests, it sits on carved baluster legs with brass casters. The proportions are lovely, and it is very comfortable as well.

We have had the frame re-polished, the cane is all in good order. The feather filled leather cushion has been newly made in a hand dyed brown leather. The condition is excellent for its age, with normal surface wear and patina to be expected on a period piece.

We also have another near identical chair coming through and currently being restored, if you are interested in a closely matched pair, let us know.

William IV furniture, produced between 1830 and 1837, bridges the Regency period and early Victorian era, characterised by heavy classical influences, robust proportions, and architectural motifs such as scrolled arms and turned legs.

These chairs typically utilise dense hardwoods such as mahogany or rosewood, combined with natural cane webbing for ventilation and upholstery materials like hand-tooled leather for seat cushions.

Authenticity is indicated by traditional joinery methods, patination on the timber, hand-woven cane panels, and period-appropriate hardware such as brass castors on turned wooden legs.

Pairing a dark wood period chair with contemporary minimalist surroundings or neutral textiles creates a striking focal point that highlights the craftsmanship and adds historical depth to the space.

Maintain the timber and leather by keeping them away from direct sunlight and heat sources, applying appropriate microcrystalline wax to wood, and using specialised leather creams to prevent drying and cracking.
