Victorian Fusee 24 Hour Dial Clock, Lovely Condition

19th century
For Sale by Clockwise
Description

Clockwise is delighted to offer another great example of a fusee clock dating from the 1890s.

The eight day movement has shaped shoulders to the plates with an anchor escapement and has been fully overhauled so benefits from my three year guarantee.

The twelve inch dial is in lovely condition and is signed by the maker James Edward Williams of Wilmslow with Roman numerals and 24 hour numbering which is an unusual and effective feature. The clock retains its original spade hands and the bezel locks securely into a tab.

The case and bezel have been ebonised and the circular surround is pegged to the back box in the classic manner. The back box has a hinged side door, rear access door and an usual access to the pendulum on the lower box which is by means of a cut out section, which enables the pendulum to be viewed whilst the clock is working.

James Williams was a watchmaker who operated from premises in Wilmslow so this was likely the very clock that he used in his shop.

This is one of many fusee and railway clocks I have for sale with many more coming.

Clockwise specialises in longcase and bracket clocks and with clients from the world of business, film, sport, royalty and aristocracy - yet more than happy with traditional clients - Clockwise has an unrivalled reputation for excellence and superb service.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian fusee wall clock is a mechanical timepiece from the 19th century that utilizes a cone-shaped pulley system (the fusee) driven by a chain or gut line to regulate mainspring tension and ensure precise timekeeping.

These clocks typically feature a solid wooden surroundoften mahogany or painted oakhousing a brass mechanical movement, a hand-painted iron or brass dial, and a protective cast brass bezel with glass.

Authentic pieces feature a heavy, hand-assembled brass movement with a chain or gut line attached to a conical fusee barrel, hand-painted dials, cast bezels, and a winding arbour positioned on the dial face.

Position the clock as a focal piece on a neutral wall above a console table or mantelpiece, or integrate it into a curated gallery wall alongside framed prints and architectural elements.

Keep the clock away from direct heat sources and dampness, wind it key-wise at regular intervals, and have the mechanical movement cleaned and lubricated by a qualified horologist every five to seven years.
