Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century Victorian bedroom chair follows an armless nursing form upholstered in a pale sage green fabric with a subtle diamond pattern. The tall, gently curved backrest displays a grid of button tufting, while the seat is deep and low. Good quality ebonised legs support the frame, finished with dark turned wood at the front featuring delicate gilt detailing and set upon original brass castors. In a modern home, this piece suits placement in a bedroom or dressing room as a decorative occasional seat or low vanity chair. The construction combines timber finished in black with gold leaf accents and metallic hardware. Dimensions measure 55 cm in width, 65 cm in depth, and 75 cm in total height, with a seat height of 32 cm.

FAQs

Victorian nursing and slipper chairs were designed as low-seated, armless chairs intended for use in private rooms such as bedrooms and nurseries. Originating in the nineteenth century, their armless profile allowed occupants wearing period garments to sit comfortably whilst dressing or tending to children.

These chairs typically featured solid hardwood frames, such as beech or mahogany, finished with an ebonised black stain and gilt accents. Internal construction incorporated steel coil springs, natural horsehair padding, jute webbing, and brass castors on turned front legs.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-turned front legs with genuine gilt highlights displaying subtle wear or natural oxidisation. Look for traditional joinery, brass castors secured with period screws, and deep button-tufting executed over structured padding.

A low-profile Victorian chair can be positioned in a bedroom corner, dressing area, or alcove to serve as decorative seating. Pairing the dark ebonised frame and patterned upholstery with understated contemporary furnishings provides balanced visual contrast.

Keep the chair clear of direct sunlight and radiators to avoid wood movement or flaking gilding. Dust the ebonised legs using a dry microfibre cloth, avoid liquid solvents, and vacuum the fabric regularly using a gentle brush attachment.
