Writing slopes became popular during the Regency era as portable desks for travellers and gentlemen to store stationery, ink, and correspondence securely.

They were typically crafted from hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or rosewood, and frequently reinforced with brass strapping, corner brackets, and flush handles for durability during travel.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, traditional timber shrinkage, hand-forged or cast brass hardware, and secondary woods like pine or cedar inside the compartments.

An antique writing slope can be displayed closed on a console table or open on a desk to function as a striking decorative display case for modern stationery and curiosities.

Maintain the timber by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and periodically apply natural beeswax to nourish the wood and preserve the antique finish.
