Thames Valley Windsor chairs are traditional English vernacular seating pieces characterised by their sturdy construction, typically featuring elm seats combined with ash or yew for the spindles and bends, often incorporating distinctive pierced splats.

These chairs traditionally utilise a combination of native timbers, predominantly employing elm for the sculpted saddle seat due to its resistance to splitting, alongside ash, beech, or yew for the steam-bent bow and spindles.

Authentic pieces exhibit period construction techniques such as wedge-tenon joints where legs pass entirely through the seat, hand-sculpted adze marks on the seat, and natural patination and wear consistent with age.

An antique Windsor chair works effectively as a statement piece in a modern setting, contrasting cleanly against minimalist white walls or adding warmth to a home office or dining space.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources and sunlight, periodically applying traditional beeswax to nourish the wood surface without sealing it with modern synthetic varnishes.
