Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating during the Restauration period between 1830 and 1840, the French Romantique style favored narrative and literary subjects, historical costume, and expressive figural sculptures over strict classical symmetry. Timepieces from this era frequently integrated sculpted human figures into daily life scenes, surrounded by foliage or architectural elements.

These timepieces were primarily constructed using bronze cast via the lost-wax technique, which was then fire-gilded (ormolu) using a mercury mixture to achieve a golden finish. Dials were commonly crafted from silvered brass or enamel, housed alongside steel and brass mechanical movements.

Authentic pieces feature hand-chased detail on the bronze castings, visible assembly screws or pinions on the reverse, and characteristic wear on high points where the fire-gilding has naturally thinned over time. Clock movements often bear maker stamps, serial numbers, or French countwheel strike mechanisms appropriate to the era.

Place the clock as a focal decorative piece on a marble fireplace mantelpiece, a dark wood sideboard, or a central console table. It pairs well alongside contemporary line drawings, minimalist ceramics, or natural stone surfaces to create a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern design.

Dust the surface regularly using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre cloth, ensuring no moisture or liquid cleaners are applied, as abrasives can permanently damage delicate ormolu gilding. Mechanical clockworks require professional horological servicing every five to seven years to clean and lubricate internal gears.
