A Fabulous Secret Desk Stationery Box, C 1890

19th century
Sold 6 February 2026 · Robert Belcher Antiques
This “Fabulous Secret Desk Stationery Box, C 1890” found a buyer.

It was listed by Robert Belcher Antiques. Sold pieces stay on Sellingantiques as a record of what has passed through, and the next one is rarely far away.

Description

This most pleasing novelty box has been meticulously hand made by a highly skilled English bookbinder in the late 19th century.

To anybody looking, it genuinely looks like a small collection of fine hand bound leather and gilt tooled period books. In reality, it is a cleverly constructed desk stationery box of generous scale and proportion.

The box secretly opens from the centre line of the book's front binding and hinges back from the top to reveal a wonderfully colourful interior which is divided into four graduated compartments, and each section is covered in decorative hand marbled papers finished with red leather edging which matches the red suede lining to the underside of the box to protect polished surfaces.

The box is a genuine work of art and is in remarkable condition, showing very little signs of wear or fading.

Dealers Notes

Robert Belcher Antiques was established in 1984 and is a high-quality retailer of interesting, rare antiques and decorative objects. After forty years of shop keeping and maintaining beautiful showrooms, which have been regularly open six days a week, Robert and Wendy have now taken a slightly different approach to their business. Having sold their retail premises, the antique business is now fully online. The picture framing service has ceased to operate because of moving online.

You can contact Robert and Wendy by email or telephone to discuss items from their extensive catalogue of attractive pieces and make purchases. Customers can rest assured that the long-established dealership is continuing to run in an exceedingly professional way, selling genuine and high-quality items which are guaranteed to please the most discerning collector, decorator or homeowner.

All items will be personally hand packaged to a high standard. Small items are extensively wrapped using the best materials and are often double boxed. Items are then shipped with DHL or Royal Mail fully insured and often with next day delivery. Larger items would be personally delivered or sent with a specialist antique delivery firm, or for outside the U.K, a professional shipping company.

Please enjoy viewing their collection of rare and interesting pieces and have the assurance that Robert and Wendy will do their utmost to make sure your experience is exceptional, as has been recognised by many customers who have bought with confidence regularly over the years.

A faux book stationery box is a desk accessory disguised as a row of leather-bound volumes, popular in the 19th century to neatly organise letters, envelopes, and writing materials while maintaining an elegant aesthetic on a library desk.

These pieces were typically constructed using a wooden core, lined with hand-marbled paper, and covered in tooled leather or calfskin with decorative gold leaf blocking on the spine accents.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-tooled leather work, traditional hand-marbled paper linings, genuine age-related patination, and construction methods characteristic of the late 19th century such as dovetailed joints or hand-stitched leather seams.

It can be placed atop an executive desk, bookshelf, or side table to serve as functional storage while adding a touch of academic charm and texture to the room.

Keep the item away from direct sunlight and excessive moisture to prevent the leather from drying and the marbled paper from fading. Occasional gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth is recommended.
