A Chippendale Period Quilted Mahogany Tea Caddy

18th century
Description

A George III Chippendale period tea caddy veneered in quilted mahogany; the lid with a rococo swan neck handle which opens to reveal an interior divided into three sections; having barber's pole stringing to each edge and raised on ormolu ogee bracket feet.

I love how the quilted mahogany catches the light and seems to have a three dimensional quality. The rococo brass work is all original. Circa 1760.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Chippendale period tea caddy is a lockable wooden container crafted during the mid-to-late 18th century in Great Britain, designed specifically to store loose leaf tea.

Georgian tea caddies were typically constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany or walnut, combined with cast brass handles, escutcheons, and internal lead or foil linings.

Authentic 18th-century tea caddies feature hand-cut dovetail joinery, period-appropriate brass fittings showing natural oxidisation, hand-planed timber interiors, and historical lock hardware.

An antique mahogany tea caddy functions as a decorative accent when positioned on a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table alongside contemporary or neutral decorative items.

Maintain a mahogany tea caddy by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth and applying high-grade beeswax polish sparingly, avoiding exposure to direct sunlight and heating sources.
