Lumley Castle's family history began with the Lumley family, who converted their manor into the current castle in 1389 under Sir Ralph Lumley. After Sir Ralph was executed for plotting against King Henry IV, the castle was briefly forfeited before returning to the Lumley family through his grandson, Thomas, in 1421. The family continued to own the castle through various generations, making alterations and hosting notable guests like King James VI, before it was sold in 1976 to be converted into a hotel.
