FAQs

Giltwood mirrors gained prominence during the Baroque and Rococo periods in Europe, where master craftsmen applied thin sheets of gold leaf to carved wooden frames to reflect candlelight and project wealth.

Authentic period pieces are constructed from carved softwoods like pine or hardwoods like gesso-coated oak, layered with bole and hand-applied gold leaf, often featuring traditional joinery.

Authentication involves inspecting the gesso base for age-related craquelure, examining the wood substrate for hand-carving tool marks, and checking the mirror plate for old bevels, foxing, or mercury backing.

They function effectively as focal points when hung above a mantelpiece or console table, creating a deliberate contrast against minimalist contemporary walls or adding warmth to traditional schemes.

Gilt surfaces require very gentle dusting with a soft, dry ostrich feather duster; water, chemical cleaners, and abrasive cloths must be strictly avoided to prevent stripping the delicate gold leaf.
