Antique Boulle Tea Caddy, 19th Century 24cm in Excellent Order

19th century
Description

Antique boulle tea caddy dating from the late 19th century and in excellent condition with no faults.

It's 24cm wide and the top is covered in boulle inlay with a blank decorative cartouche in the centre.

The front has a swag of boulle around the keyhole.

The back and sides are ebony and inside there are two lids inlaid with brass stringing revealing the tea canisters with the original silver paper lining.

The inside of the lid and the underside of the two inner lids are rosewood.

Maybe a tea caddy isn;t the most useful think in the modern world, but maybe it could be used for storage on a desk, or dressing table. Or would look great on a hall table for keys!

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Boulle work is a decorative marquetry technique developed in 17th-century France by Andre-Charles Boulle, involving the inlay of cut brass and tortoiseshell onto wood. This method creates geometric, arabesque, and floral patterns across the surface of furniture and desktop boxes.

A 19th-century Boulle tea caddy typically consists of a wooden coreoften ebonised fruitwood or mahoganyveneered with brass scrollwork set into natural or dyed red tortoiseshell. The interior compartments were frequently lined with foil or zinc to protect stored tea leaves.

Authentic 19th-century pieces display hand-cut brass inlays, natural variation in the tortoiseshell colouring, and fine surface engraving on the metal sections. Look for period-appropriate brass hinges, original lock mechanisms, and light oxidisation on metal surfaces.

A Boulle tea caddy functions as a decorative accent when placed on a dark timber sideboard, library shelf, or console table. Position it alongside structured glass items, brass candlesticks, or neutral art volumes to balance the detailed metalwork.

Position the box away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity to prevent the tortoiseshell from lifting or shrinking. Dust gently using a dry, soft, lint-free cloth, avoiding liquid polishes or abrasive chemical cleaners that damage brass and tortoiseshell.
