FAQs

Windsor chairs originated in England during the early 18th century, evolving from vernacular furniture-making traditions where spindles were socketed directly into a solid wooden seat.

They are traditionally constructed using a combination of timbers, typically employing elm for the carved solid seat, ash or oak for the bent parts and legs, and birch or beech for the spindles.

Authentic pieces often show tool marks from adzes on the underside of the seat, hand-turned components with minor irregularities, and construction methods utilising wedged tenons and tapered joints rather than modern metal fixings.

An antique Windsor chair can be juxtaposed against a sleek contemporary dining table or used as a standalone accent piece in a minimalist room to introduce texture, history, and organic warmth.

Preserve the wood by keeping the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent splitting, and periodically nourish the surface with a traditional microcrystalline wax rather than modern silicone polishes.
