We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French giltwood mirrors, particularly from the 18th and 19th centuries, are characterised by intricate carved wooden frames coated in thin gold leaf or gesso, often featuring rococo or neoclassical motifs.

These pieces typically utilise a solid timber base such as pine or oak, hand-carved or moulded with gesso, and finished with gold leaf applied over a bole layer. Traditional joinery and mercury or silvered sheet glass are often found in older examples.

Authenticity is indicated by historical wear patterns, foxing or oxidisation in the glass plate, hand-cut components in the frame construction, and traditional gesso application rather than modern synthetic resin.

Placing a large leaner mirror against a neutral wall introduces verticality, reflects natural light, and creates a focal point that contrasts contemporary minimalism with historic texture.

Dust the frame gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth, avoiding any liquid cleaners, moisture, or chemical solvents that could damage the delicate gold leaf finish.
