Windsor chairs originated in the English countryside during the early 18th century, evolving from vernacular furniture traditions into sophisticated seating featuring distinctive bowed backs and sculpted wooden seats.

They were traditionally constructed using a combination of timbers, typically employing elm for the saddle seat, ash or yew for the bent limbs and spindles, and beech or fruitwood for the turned underframe.

Authenticity is identified through period construction features such as wedge-tenon joints where the legs pass through the seat, hand-sculpted saddle contours, tool marks, and appropriate timber oxidisation consistent with the early 19th century.

They can be introduced around a modern minimalist dining table to add historical texture and organic warmth, or utilised as standalone accent seating in a study or hallway.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources and treating the wood periodically with traditional beeswax to nourish the patina without sealing the surface.
