Description

Absolutely beautiful Regency rosewood table cabinet dating from 1830 and inlaid with mother of pearl, all in stunning, original condition.

It is 36cm across and 36cm high, and the two doors open to reveal 4 drawers, each inlaid and with a shaped mother of pearl knob.

Inside each door is a leather panel which has a gilded edge and a central gilded cartouche, all in excellent order.

Each side of the cabinet has a rosewood ring handle, both undamaged, and it stands on 4 beautifully shaped rosewood feet.

A really important feature of this beautiful cabinet is, under the third drawer down the original owner has written the whole story about how the cabinet was made in 1830, and what it was purchased for. You can read this in the final picture.

The drawers all have the best quality, hand-cut dovetails, and overall this is an absolutely stunning piece, of fine quality. It has been in the same family for many years, this is the first time on the market for decades.

One final note, the beading that runs down between the doors has a slight break to it. I have left it as it is as it is completely original and untouched for almost 200 years, but I can have it repaired if you should desire.

FAQs

Regency furniture, spanning roughly from 1811 to 1830, is characterised by classical influences derived from ancient Greece and Rome, featuring clean architectural lines, exotic woods like rosewood, and meticulous brass or metal inlay work.

These cabinets were typically built using dense tropical hardwoods such as rosewood or mahogany as a carcase, often embellished with intricate brass stringing, pewter, mother-of-pearl inlay, and fine turned wooden feet.

Authentic pieces exhibit period construction techniques such as hand-cut dovetailing, old secondary woods on the interior, hand-cast brass hardware, and natural ageing like shrinkage cracks and oxidisation within the inlay channels.

An antique table cabinet can be placed on a credenza, sideboard, or executive desk to serve as a focal point for displaying small curiosities, adding textural contrast and historical depth to contemporary spaces.

Preserve antique rosewood by keeping it out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, maintaining stable indoor humidity to avoid wood splitting, and dusting gently with a dry, soft cloth without using modern silicone-based polishes.
