Dutch floral marquetry gained immense popularity during the 17th and 18th centuries, heavily influenced by the Dutch Golden Age and a growing fascination with exotic botany. Master craftsmen used fine veneers such as walnut, rosewood, and various fruitwoods to create intricate, highly detailed floral and foliage designs that showcased wealth and status.

These pieces typically feature a carcase of secondary woods like oak or pine, surfaced with decorative veneers and elaborate marquetry inlay. Cabinetmakers employed hand-cut dovetail joints for drawers, traditional mortise and tenon joinery for the frame, and applied hand-carved mouldings along with cast brass hardware.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural ageing characteristics such as minor shrinkage of veneers, hand-bevelled glass panes, and irregularities in the hand-cut inlay work. Examining the interior construction reveals hand-planed surfaces, historical fixings, and old patination that modern reproductions cannot replicate.

Pairing a highly decorative antique cabinet with minimalist contemporary surroundings allows the intricate woodwork to stand out as a focal point. Keep surrounding decor restrained, using neutral wall colours and clean lines to balance the visual weight and ornate detail of the piece.

Maintain stable indoor humidity levels and keep the wood away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer lifting and timber cracking. Clean surfaces periodically with a soft, dry cloth and occasionally nourish the wood with traditional beeswax, avoiding modern silicone-based polishes.
