Coromandel, sometimes known as calamander wood, is a dense and heavily grained timber native to India and Sri Lanka, highly prized in Victorian cabinet making for its rich dark brown colour and intricate figuring.

These pieces typically feature solid timber carcasses veneered with exotic hardwoods, reinforced with mitred joints, and frequently accented with hand-cut brass stringing, escutcheons, and velvet or silk interior linings.

Authenticity is determined by examining internal secondary timbers, hand-cut dovetails, the presence of traditional iron or brass locks, and natural ageing characteristics such as shrinkage cracks in the veneer.

Positioning the piece on a console table, bookshelf, or coffee table allows its rich grain and metallic inlay to function as a focal point, contrasting effectively against minimalist surfaces.

Maintain stable ambient humidity away from direct sunlight and heat sources, applying occasional microcrystalline wax to nourish the timber while avoiding abrasive cleaners on the brass hardware.
