Georgian Scarce Small Engraved Double Series Opaque Twist Wine Glass

18th century
Description

This is a short Georgian, English engraved double series opaque twist stem wine glass dating from the middle of the 18th century, c1765.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot commensurate with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has an ogee-shaped bowl measuring 5 cm (2 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is engraved with hatched swags and tails under the rim and with a frond of hare bells to one side and a leaf sprig to verso. The bowl sits on a double series opaque twist stem consisting of four white enamel "cotton" strands wound around a central gauze. The stem ends in a conical foot which measures 7.4 cm (3 inches) in diameter. The glass is 11 cm (4.4 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration.

Lead glass weighing in at 130 g. (~ 4 1/2 oz.).

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian opaque twist wine glasses were produced in Britain during the mid-to-late 18th century, characterized by opaque white enamel rods embedded inside the clear glass stem to form spiralling cane designs.

Glassmakers arranged white enamel canes within a cylindrical mould, poured molten clear lead glass around them, and drawn and twisted the hot glass rod to create intricate internal spiral patterns before fusing the stem to the bowl and foot.

Authentic pieces feature lead glass construction with distinct weight and resonance, a canonical or folded foot, irregular pontil marks on the base, and period-appropriate hand-executed wheel engraving or subtle surface wear.

Antique stemware can be displayed in illuminated glazed cabinets, arranged on a dining room sideboard, or incorporated into a curated tabletop vignette alongside contrasting contemporary ceramics.

Hand wash stemware individually in lukewarm water using mild detergent and a soft cloth, avoiding dishwasher temperatures, harsh chemicals, or sudden temperature shifts that induce thermal shock.
