Georgian wine glass. The ogee bowl with moulded basal flutes above a outlined lace twist and plain conical foot. English c1765.

Rim dia: 4.8 cm.

Foot dia: 7.1 cm.

Weight: 137 grams.

Condition: Very good.

Note: A nice glass.

Georgian glassware refers to lead-crystal drinking vessels and decorative items crafted in Great Britain during the reigns of King George I through King George IV, approximately between 1714 and 1830. These pieces are recognised for their heavy lead glass composition, hand-blown forms, and distinctive stem designs including baluster, air-twist, and opaque-twist variations.

Twist stem glasses were constructed using English flint glass, which contained a high percentage of lead oxide to increase brilliance and weight. The intricate internal stems were formed by drawing out rods of molten glass embedded with air bubbles or opaque white enamel threads, which were twisted while ductile before attaching the bowl and foot.

Authentic period pieces display hand-crafting traits such as a rough or smoothed pontil scar beneath the foot, subtle asymmetrical proportions, and slight dark or greyish undertones in the glass fabric. Genuine examples also show natural, uneven wear rings on the underside of the base where the foot has contacted surfaces over centuries.

Antique glass goblets can be displayed inside illuminated glass cabinets, arranged in groups of varying heights on a dining sideboard, or used as accent pieces on a drinks trolley alongside traditional decanters.

Hand wash individual pieces in lukewarm water using a mild liquid detergent, avoiding temperature extremes that cause thermal shock. Dry immediately with a soft, lint-free microfibre cloth to prevent water spotting, and store upright without allowing the rims to touch.
