Technical Description
An 18th century opaque twist wine glass, dating to circa 1760. It features a flarred trumpet bowl above a double-series opaque twist stem, comprising a pair of solid spiral bands outside a pair of spiral tapes. Conical foot.
Historical Context
Air twists gave way to opaque twists in the mid-18th century as taste shifted towards bolder, more decorative designs. Opaque twists, with their white canes, created a stronger visual effect and were more fashionable.
At the same time, advances in glassmaking allowed for more complex and intricate stem constructions, making opaque twists a showcase of both craftsmanship and status.
