Originating in Great Britain around 1740 to 1770, plain stem glasses were developed following taxes on glass weight, leading manufacturers to design simple, elegant unadorned stems supporting varied bowl shapes.

These pieces were hand-blown from heavy lead crystal, often referred to as flint glass, which provided clarity and resonance. Stems were formed separately or pulled directly from the bowl, often incorporating an air tear bubble motif.

Authentic period glass displays a distinct dark greyish cast under light, a rough or snapped pontil mark beneath the conical foot, and light uneven wear around the basal rim from historic usage.
