Rare 18th Century Opaque Twist Wine Glass C1760 with Firing Foot

18th century
For Sale by Exhibit Antiques
Description

Description

A rare 18th-century opaque twist wine glass dating to c1760.

It has a round funnel bowl above a remarkably unusual double-series opaque twist stem consisting of a four-ply spiral band and a six-ply spiral band surrounding a central lace twist. It stands on an exceptionally thick firing foot.

Although technically this stem could be described as a triple-series opaque twist, it differs from the recognised classifications. The two outer spiral bands are formed from canes of different ply, creating a striking asymmetrical effect. Whether this was an intentional variation by the glassmaker or simply the result of using spiral canes of differing widths is impossible to determine, but we have never previously encountered another example of this arrangement.

The firing foot is an even more remarkable feature. Thick firing feet are almost exclusively associated with Georgian firing dram glasses and are exceptionally rare on opaque twist wine glasses. Having handled and sold well over 300 different styles of opaque twist glasses, this is the first example we have encountered with a genuine firing foot, making it an outstanding rarity.

An exceptional and highly unusual opaque twist wine glass that combines two features seldom, if ever, found together.

This Georgian lead glass wine glass dates to the period of King George III around 1760. The clear vessel has a bell bowl above a white opaque twist stem, which contains a double-series opaque twist with a four-ply spiral band, a six-ply spiral band, and a central lace twist. It stands on a thickened, circular firing foot base. The glass is clear and white, with no chips, cracks, or restorations visible. Measuring 13.2 cm in height with a 5 cm rim diameter and a 6.3 cm foot diameter, this piece weighs 167 grams. It suits a sideboard top in a gentleman's library or a dining room setting today, where it can be displayed as a collector's item or used for special occasions.

Developed in mid-18th century Great Britain, opaque twist wine glasses feature decorative white enamel spiralling patterns encapsulated within a clear glass stem.

Craftsmen inserted white enamel canes into a glass mould, surrounded them with molten lead crystal, and drew out and twisted the stem before attaching the hand-blown bowl and foot.

Authentic period examples exhibit pontil marks on the base, minor handheld irregularities within the twist pattern, appropriate surface wear on the foot rim, and significant weight characteristic of lead glass.

These historical glass items are best styled inside lit display cabinets, on open dining room shelving, or arranged across a sideboard top to contrast with contemporary decor.

Wash by hand using lukewarm water and mild detergent, avoiding abrasive sponges, dishwashers, and sudden thermal shifts that cause glass fracture.
