FAQs

An antique artists box is a portable case containing watercolours, palettes, and drawing tools, which became particularly popular during the Georgian and Victorian eras as sketching and painting grew into widespread gentlemanly and gentlewomanly pursuits.

These boxes were typically constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany or rosewood, featuring brass hinges, escutcheons, and internal fittings made of porcelain, glass, or turned bone.

Authenticity is generally identified through hand-cut dovetail joints, period-appropriate brass hardware, makers paper labels pasted inside the lid, and the natural patina of aged wood and pigments.

This piece can be displayed closed on a bookshelf, desk, or coffee table to introduce historic character, tactile warmth, and an element of curiosity to a room.

To preserve the wood and internal paper elements, keep the box away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations, treating the exterior periodically with a microcrystalline wax.
