This Victorian hotel or country house letterbox from 1900 consists of warm brown mahogany fitted with polished brass mounts, bevelled glass windows and a working Bramah lock with a key. The sloped top features an engraved brass plate labelled letters above a glazed viewing panel, whilst the lower section includes a glazed door and a telegram drawer with a small turned wooden knob and a brass manufacturer's plaque at the base. Visible details encompass stepped wooden mouldings around the base and clear panel edges. The piece measures 30.5 cm high, 33 cm wide and 21.6 cm deep. Suitable for domestic or professional settings, this desktop accessory functions as a letter repository on an office desk or library table, keeping daily correspondence organised.

During the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, desktop letterboxes were placed in private country houses, hotels, and private clubs to receive outgoing mail and telegrams from guests and residents before collection by the postal service.

These receptacles were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany or oak, accented with cast brass fittings for letter slots, drawer pulls, and lock escutcheons, alongside bevelled glass panels.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, period-correct brassware with natural patination, original locking mechanisms, and engraved or stamped lettering designating postal purpose.

An antique letterbox functions well on an executive office desk, console table, or hallway sideboard, serving as a functional storage box for stationery or as a decorative accent piece.

The wood finish should be maintained using a high-quality beeswax polish applied along the grain, while brass fittings should be kept free of harsh chemicals to preserve their developed patina.
